Iron Man 4 Might See Downey Jr Return as Tony Stark but Not as Iron Man, Ty Simpkins Rumored to be the Next Iron Man!

A number of rumors regarding the next iteration of Iron Man has been doing rounds on the internet for quite some time now. The last released movie of this franchise was Iron Man 3 which rolled onto the big screen back in 2013.

As for the next installment, which is Iron Man 4, it was previously reported that renowned actor, Robert Downey Jr. might not be seen reprising his role of Tony Stark a.k.a. Iron Man for the movie. Till date Downey Jr. has made a total of five appearances as Tony Stark and his alter ego Iron Man in five different films.

His first appearance as the smooth-talking billionaire and the armored superhero was in the first Iron Man film which was released in 2008. Since then, the actor has dawned the role for two more Iron Man movies and two Avengers movies.

Various reports suggested that the actor was reluctant to take on the role one more time because of his age. At present, Downey Jr. is 51. It is unlikely that the shooting of Iron Man 4 will begin before 2019. By that time the actor will turn 54. Thus, his reluctance to do the role is quite understandable at this point.

If indeed, Downey Jr. backs out from the role, it is likely that he will be replaced with a much younger actor. One name that has been doing rounds regarding his replacement is Ty Simpkins. Ty Simpkins has already made an appearance in an Iron Man film. He was the kid named Harley Keener who helped Tony Stark in Iron Man 3 when his suit was damaged.

However, it should be noted that the filmmakers have not given any confirmation to this rumor and thus readers are advised to take it with a pinch of salt.

A renowned website reported that Downey Jr. might make an appearance in the upcoming installment of Iron Man. However, his appearance in the movie will remain limited to the character of Tony Stark. The role of Iron Man will be played by some other actor.

This clearly means that someone other than Tony Stark will have to step up to dawn the armored suit. The site also points towards Ty Simpkins as the possible choice in this regard. Another name that was pitched by the site as Stark’s successor was his friend Rhodes.

Don Cheadle plays the character of Rhodes and his alter ego- Iron Patriot. However, speculations are hot that the character of Rhodes might meet his death in the upcoming Captain America movie titled- Captain America: Civil War. In that case, Rhodes will not be the one to succeed Tony Stark as the next Iron Man.

It should also be noted that Downey Jr.’s contract with Marvel Studios will expire by the time the filming of Iron Man 4 begins. Given the fact, that Downey Jr. is one of the highest paid actors of Hollywood at the current moment, it might be too expensive to sign him back on for the movie.

However, if Downey Jr. makes an appearance in the upcoming movie as Tony Stark, he might be seen acting as a mentor to the person who will dawn the Iron suit in the movie.

That being said, Downey Jr. will put on the Iron suit two more times for two different upcoming movies which are- Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. Downey Jr. recently stated that Captain America: Civil War is like his own little version of Iron Man 4.

Downey Jr. made this comment during an interview with USA Today. He also stated- “Everything pulls over to the side of the road when the thunder of an Avengers thing comes through because that’s how it is until it changes. If it changes.”

  1. RDJ is Iron Man. If the story is passing the mantle that’s one thing, but nobody will ever replace the character RDJ brought to life. I personally think the actor’s age is irreverent given the fact that Iron Man is a suit. After all in the first film Jeff Bridges suited up for the big showdown and he wasn’t exactly a spring chicken in years. I think an older RDJ suiting up one last time would be totally believable. Then if the film showed him passing on the suit it would be a bittersweet but acceptable change over, but the end of the true Iron Man in a sense. I hope the film makers realize that trying to relaunch Iron Man with a new actor in the suit will never live up to the RDJ version.
