Huawei P9 with Leica Camera Module Unveiled, Device Packs an Impressive Tech-Sheet, to Be Available for Purchase Later This Month!

The next smartphone from the house of Huawei, the Huawei P9 was just announced in the recent past. The special feature about this device is that it will sport a dual camera setup on its back and the camera module has been developed by Leica. It should be mentioned here that Leica is a renowned name in the world of cameras.

The P9 features a 12-megapixel camera on its back. Beside that module the developers have inserted another monochrome camera which is also of 12-megapixels. The advantage of this setup is that the contrast in photos taken by this camera setup will be increased by 50 percent compared to other photos taken by normal 12-megapixel cameras.

Another benefit that the setup will provide is that the light information taken in by the phone for the photos will be increased by three-fold. This will make the images more vibrant and the color reproduction too will be excellent.

The color camera requires a RGB light filtering while taking images. However, the monochrome one doesn’t require this feature. This enables it to absorb more amount of photons while taking an image, resulting in more light information being taken in by the device.

Experts believe that the tie-up of Huawei with Leica might propel the company’s future smartphones into the big league which features players like Samsung and Apple. Wang Yanhui of Mobile China Alliance while speaking about the device recently stated– “Huawei has put great effort into its mobile phones’ picture-taking function, which is one of the most important features for high-end smartphones.”

Many renowned photographers and also photojournalists were present during the launch of the device including the likes of David Guttenfelder and Mary McCartney from National Geographic.

A special early access to the device was given to Germany-based photographer Alexander Kopke. He is of the opinion that the device inculcates much creativity into mobile photography. He also added that the device is the first smartphone that actually has the potential to replace the pro cameras that he uses for photography.

The launch event of the device was held at the Battersea Evolution at London. The event was graced by the presence of many renowned celebrities like Henry Cavill and Scarlett Johansson. It should be noted here that Henry Cavill is a part of the campaign for the device.

The CEO of Huawei Business Group, Richard Yu was also present at the event and he stated- “We believe in cultural technology, born out of people’s curiosity and desire to be creative by changing the way they experience the world around them. With the P9, working with Leica, we have challenged the norm of what was possible in lens technology – a game-changer for smartphone photography.”

As for the other technical aspects of the device, the Huawei P9 sports a 5.2-inch Full HD display. It features an IPS-NEO LCD capacitive touchscreen that is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 4 for added safety.

The screen has a display resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels with a pixel density of 423 pixels per inch.

Under its hood, the developers have incorporated an octa-core Kirin 955 processor that has been developed by Huawei itself. The traditional ARM big.LITTLE architecture that is being used in many  recent smartphones has been used in this device too. It means that out of the total eight cores of the processor, four are clocked at 1.8GHZ while the other four are clocked at 2.5GHz.

The processor is coupled with 3GB of RAM and a Mali T-880 MP4 GPU. It comes in two variants based on the internal memory. While one variant packs 32GB of inbuilt memory, the same has been upped to 64GB in the other variant.

The storage space of the device can be expanded up to 128GB using an external microSD card. It should be mentioned here that the 64GB variant of the device packs a 4GB RAM.
