The Mi5 smartphone was unveiled by Xiaomi at the Mobile World Congress which was held in the previous month. It is being touted as the successor of the Mi4 which was released back in 2014.
The device packs quite impressive specs with the latest Snapdragon 820 processor form Qualcomm under its hood coupled with 3GB of RAM and Adreno 530 GPU. It comes with the measurements of 144.6 x 69.2 x 7.3 mm and weighs in at 139g.
The device sports a 5.15-inch screen which has a display resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels. The pixel density of the display is 428 ppi. The screen comes protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 4. The back side of the device is also protected with the same version of Gorilla Glass which makes it quite sturdy and durable.
It comes with Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box. The primary camera on the device is a whopping 16-megpixels with a f/2.0 aperture lens. Some of the features of the camera include Optical Image Stabilization and phase detection autofocus.
A dual LED dual-tone flash is also built into the device which ensures that the camera is fully functional under low light conditions. The front camera is a decent 4-megapixel one with the same f/2.0 aperture lens and 1/3” sensor size.
The standard set of connectivity features that the device comes with include- Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, dual-band, Wi-Fi Direct, DLNA, hotspot, Bluetooth v4.2, A2DP, LE, GPS with A-GPS, GLONASS, BDS and a USB Type- C port. It also features the NFC feature and an Infrared Port is also built into it.
The device packs a number of sensors like- accelerometer, gyro meter, a proximity sensor, a barometer and a compass. A fingerprint sensor is also present on the device for the purpose of added security.
The Xiaomi Mi5 is powered by a massive 3000mAH battery that keeps the device up and running throughout the day. It is loaded with Quick Charge 3.0 which will enable users to charge the device from 0 to 83 percent in just 30 minutes.
The least-priced variant of the device comes with a price tag of $305. It is loaded with a 1.8GHz Snapdragon 820 SOC with 3GB of RAM and Adreno 530. The inbuilt memory on this version is 32GB.
Another variant of the device that was unveiled was more advanced compared to the previous one. This one comes with 2.15GHz Snapdragon 820 processor along with 3GB of RAM and Adreno 530. The inbuilt memory on this variant stands at 64GB. It is priced at $415. However, it will be sometime before this variant becomes available for purchase.
The device was recently sold in a flash sale in China. It was reported that nearly 17 million people registered for the flash sale which was held on Wednesday. Xiaomi revealed that they had readied 4 million Mi5s for the sale and every single one of them was sold on Wednesday itself in the flash sale.
It was also revealed by the company that they themselves had no idea that the response regarding the device will be so overwhelming. To meet up with the enormous demand, Xiaomi has requested Foxconn and Inventec to step up the production of the device. It should be noted here that Foxconn and Inventec are the manufacturers of Xiaomi.
The device will not be officially introduced to the U.S. markets, however, interested customers can pre-order the device from Gearbest.com. It is currently listed for $439.99 at the online retail store. The store will provide free shipping of the device. Shipping will start after April 15.
