SBS has reported that while the visitors and athletes aren’t going to drink the water from the Guanabara Bay, they will have to breathe in the polluted air in Rio. Reuters reported that most of Rio Olympics’ venues for water sports and beaches have tested positive for drug-resistant bacteria. This has caused a lot of unrest but has taken away the attention from the polluted Rio air.
Tania Braga, the head of sustainability and legacy for the Rio Olympics organizing committee, has come out to talk about the issue related to the air pollution in Rio. She said that air pollution shouldn’t be considered only from the perspective of the particulate matter. Braga said that Rio’s air is within the WHO limits when it comes to the other pollutants like sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide.
In spite of all the reports and claims about the unsafe Rio waterways doing the rounds on the internet, the Olympics officials have made it clear that the venues for the different sporting events are completely safe for the athletes. They have gone on record to state that they would never jeopardize the life of the various athletes if they found that the Rio waterways weren’t safe for them. The officials have made it clear that the athletes aren’t risking their lives by participating in the water sports.
