The first proper trailer has finally been received by Tales of Berseria and viewers who got to witness this trailer should have noticed what appears to be a Tales game with a darker theme. The Tales series was first initiated with the original Tales of Phantasia on the SNES; it was a rather innovative take on the RPG game formula.
The game made use of a more action-oriented and similar in-game speed resulting in a beat-em-up theme instead of traditional slow-paced turn based mechanics used for the battles. Keep in mind that the core mechanics of the game were still turn-based. The entire result felt less-restrictive due to a far greater tempo.
The combat system has been improved to a great extent in Berseria. This resulted in a more open movement, making a transition from freer camera. Moreover, the combat mechanics in this game is quite close to a complete action game and fans are curious to know how it all turns out.
Tales games have included Linear Motion Battle System as a core part of this franchise. Ever since they started this feature, this is not something that should be taken lightly or tampered with. Tales of Zestiria was the latest major entry in this series which was released this year. This was done in order to coincide with the 20th anniversary of this series.
The game received mixed response in Japan. From the looks of it, Berseria will do its best resolve some of the major complaints. Moreover, a Zestiria anime series has already been planned and it looks rather than impressive. So far, the narrative setting in Berseria is looking rather bleak in nature.
Velvet, the scantily clad protagonist of this game, has many vicious looking shape-shifting abilities. Moreover, the overall tone of this game appears rather dark. The new changes in this series feels rather new and fans are interested to see the heights they will take it to, in the final game.
A character called Laiphaset has been introduced in order to manage this darker tone. This character is meant to offset the more somber nature of Velvet. Furthermore, he will play a very important role in the game.
The character designer Mutsumi Inomata is still on-board with Berseria and this sounds rather exciting as well. The series has been well-defined by its art style and due to this, the characters in this game has a very warm aesthetic feel.
The only problem about this game is that, considering it being a PS3 and PS4 title, the game looks visually basic while considering the trailer. Everything else looks quite dated even though the characters look rather lovely. Keep in mind that this game has a long way to go until it is released next year and this is simply early game footage.
During its eventual release, it can be expected that the visual setting of this game is more improved. There is a wonderful lineage present behind Tales of Berseria and it would be a shame if this title is plagued with subpar visuals.
It was recently confirmed by Bandai Namco that Tales of Berseria is coming to PC and PlayStation 4 in both North America and Europe. Velvet is the new protagonist to be featured in the next entry of this series. This character travels the world on a pirate ship. The release date is yet to be announced but the second trailer was used in order to confirm that Tales of Berseria is indeed coming.
