In the industry of video games, you might not always see the voice actors but soon they may be heard. The Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists will represent video game actors.
Right now, they are in deep discussions with the gaming industry so that a contract can be renewed with a sum of US $20 billion, which will expire on 31st December.
This mainly concerns the royalty payments and working conditions of blockbuster games which make use of the most union talent. In case talks fail, the actors authorized SAG-AFTRA to call a strike. The voice actors play a very important role in the virtual gaming industry and their leverage in this dispute, clearly points it out.
Recently, International Business Times had discussions with video game voice actress, Laura Bailey. She is responsible for the voices of main characters in huge video game franchises like World of Warcraft’s Jaina Proudmoore, Spartan Vale in Halo 5: Guardians and Chun Li in Streetfighter.
She was asked regarding the current dispute to which she replied that she knows a lot of people in the developmental side and she just wishes to come together without them suffering in any way.
Bailey revealed that being a voice actor for a video game involves a lot of imagination. According to her, while voice acting; one can be literally anything that they want to be, ranging from a little boy to a Spartan Soldier. She can portray anything she wishes to voice and this is absent in any kind of form in the gaming industry.
During a session, she can be in a recording booth for hours at a time, simply looking at a page and the scenario needs to be envisioned clearly so that the players can feel they are really there.
IBT asked about her role as Jaina Proudmoore in World of Warcraft and further asked her about her presence as Jaina in Heroes of the Storm. She replied that Hearthstone is included as well. In Heroes of the Storm, she indicated that they really wanted it to be the Jaina where she was, the wonderful peace-loving and friendly character.
She declared that it was fun to visit the Jaina that she was when Bailey first recorded her character. She also recorded Valla in Heroes of the Storm and therefore, she tried to keep things interesting by making them different.
Valla was someone completely different from the light and musical character that was Jaina. Valla is closer to Jaina at the moment, with the latter being flat and sarcastic in World of Warcraft. Bailey further revealed that she is a big fan of RPG games like BioWare’s Dragon Age and Bethesda’s Skyrim.
