Furious 7 Breaks Box Office Records With $143.6 Million, Featuring Third-Highest Grossing Internal Opening of All Time!

Recently, Furious 7 set major box-office records and jumped to number one with a massive $143.6 million domestic opening. It grossed a bombastic $384 million worldwide! If the early estimates prove to be correct, this film will mark the biggest debut for Universal franchise, which is racked up around 2 billion dollars worldwide until now. Reports indicate that it will become the ninth-biggest debut in box-office history and also establish a record in April weekend while surpassing the $95 million that Captain America: Winter Soldier took in last year.

Due to the robust opening of Furious 7, the total weekend box office is roughly $218 million, which beats the $177.6 million record set during the weekend of 2010’s Easter weekend. The box office rose by 31% from the same weekend last year and 6.4% year-to-date. The latest installment in the Fast and Furious franchise played in 4,004 North American theaters with a per-theater average of 35,870 dollars.

The film grossed $14 million on IMAX, spanning over 365 screens in Canada and U.S and a very robust strong screen average of $38,000. Meanwhile, Universal received its highest grossing international weekend by a large margin at $240.4 million. Till now, the film has grossed around $384 million worldwide.

Nicholas Carpou, Universal’s Head of Domestic Distribution stated that witnessing the worldwide results is surely a humbling experience. People have a tremendous interest in this saga, and it was great to watch this franchise progress in the way it has, so far. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 had a massive $314 million opening in July 2011. It was followed by Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides with $260.4 million in May 2011.

Following these two, current reports suggest that Furious 7 had the third-highest grossing internal opening of all time. Carpou said that there are a lot of franchises enjoying international success, but Furious 7 happens to be one that’s original. James Wan, a franchise newcomer, directed the Furious 7 film, which featured an ensemble including Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Dwayne Johnson Jason Statham, and Michelle Rodriguez.
