According to popular anticipation, Apple will be updating these models in the near future and they will probably take place during a March event. However, it may take until WWDC in June before we get to hear anything.
Meanwhile, if the new MacBooks do arrive in March, according to recent speculations the date will be 21st and the event will also witness the launch of other devices like the iPhone 5SE, new Apple Watch bands and iPad Air 3.
People are also speculating the new features to be present in the new MacBook. It will come with Skylake processors which are the new sixth generation chips by Intel.
Skylake is not offered by any of Apple MacBooks therefore Apple is probably planning to integrate them soon enough. With Skylake processor, the new MacBook Pro will get significant performance gains, making it an even faster machine.
Meanwhile, the competitors like Dell, Microsoft, and HP have already moved to Skylake and it starting to look like Apple is lagging behind.
