David Huddleston, Star of The Big Lebowski, Dies at 85 Due to Heart and Kidney Complications

Beginning in 1960 with the television western Shotgun Slade, he went on to appear in almost every major TV show in the 1970s.

Westerns were his forte, and he appeared in some of them, like How the West Was Won and Gunsmoke. Regarding Mel Brooks’ Blazing Saddles, there is an interesting anecdote shared by Brook in his 2007 book ‘I’m a Lebowski, You’re a Lebowski: Life, ‘The Big Lebowski,’ and ‘What Have You’.

On being offered the role of a mayor who had only a few lines, Huddleston rejected the offer, something which Brooks did not believe someone could do where he was concerned.

In a subsequent lunch invitation they had discussed the entire script, and Huddleston had bagged a good role in a film which he went on to describe as the one he had the most fun working in.
